The Gifts of G-d
Ibur (impregnation) - i.e., spiritual possession of a lower soul by a higher soul to the benefit of both of them.
Of course the continued presence of the tzadik's ibur depends upon the person's deeds.
Zohar: ibur of the souls of Nadav and Avihu.
A zealous Pinchas swung his deadly spear, “Avenging Hashem’s vengeance.” G-d Himself, who declared, “Pinchas became enraged (when in fact) I should have been the One Who was angry!”
So who stopped Him? Furthermore, a happy G-d sounds ok by me. And if the Master was unwilling to become angry, why did Pinchas feel compelled to take His place?
A quick review of the entire episode will unveil a most exquisite explanation. Bilaam was hired to curse the Jewish nation. Rashi: Bilaam’s expertise was his ability to determine when Hashem was angry.
King David writeS, “G-d gets angry every day?” (Psalms 7:12) Talmud clarifies, “His anger lasts but a moment.”
Nonetheless, Bilaam’s evil plans were foiled. The entire period that Bilaam attempted to curse the Jews Hashem avoided even this standard, daily, moment-of-rage.
Anger, is usually not premeditated and planned.
G-d Almighty is the source of every aspect of creation.
So Bilaam took a different tack. He gave up on cursing the Jews, and took advantage of their inherent weakness, suggesting that the Moabite women might now prove a temptation too great for the Jews, in their present state, to overcome.
Pinchas searched within himself for some righteous indignation and wrapped himself up in the mantle of Hashem’s holy anger undertaking Hashem traditional role. This re-infused into the world a “holy anger,”
“Pinchas; these are the heads of Levite clans, according to their families.” (Ex. 6:25). The Zohar asks: Why Why plural? Should have said, "This is the head of the Levite.”
Answer: That which the heads of the Levites had lost was found in him. The deficiency that Nadav and Avihu caused, Pinchas completed. It was for this reason that he earned their Priesthood
Pinchas inherited not only the priestly status, but their very souls, which came into ibur within him:
Explanation: When they Nadav and Avihu passed away, they were not protected by the Shechina because, "they had no children" (Num. 3:4). They had not fulfilled the mitzvah of "be fruitful and multiply.”
Pinchas acted zealously to protect the holy covenant sealed in a man's flesh through circumcision. He was worthy of this because of his passion for the sanctity of sexual relations.
Why did both Nadav and Avihu enter into Pinchas, instead of choosing different hosts? Why are they not found as two? Because they were each only two halves of a body, for they had not married. Therefore, the two were included as one, as it is written, "she bore Pinchas; these are the heads of Levite clans..."
This also explains, "Pinchas the son of Elazar, the son of Aaron the Priest..."; (Num. 25:11) it would have been sufficient to say, "Pinchas the son of Elazar, the Priest." However, wherever Pinchas is mentioned [in the Five Books of Moses] he is always referred to as [the son of Elazar,] the son of Aaron the Priest
In other words, the Torah always explicitly identifies Pinchas as "the son of Aaron the priest", because he can be regarded as a son by virtue of the souls of Aaron's sons impregnated into his.
Lesson: It would be a shame to waste G-d’s gift, even His gift of anger. Use it for good
